This growing Lake Elmo family had an entire unfinished basement beneath their home, but they saw an opportunity to turn that unused space into something their family could actually enjoy every day. They wanted more room to gather, relax, and accommodate their growing family, while creating a highly personalized space that reflected the way they live and the things that matter most to them.
The Client's Needs
The goal was to transform the unfinished basement into comfortable, finished living space with a living room, bedroom, and bathroom while incorporating thoughtful wellness-focused features and creating a warm, inviting environment for everyday family life.

Use clean finishes, thoughtful lighting, and a simple design approach to turn the basement into a space that feels fresh, bright, and inviting rather than unfinished.
Living Room
The new living room is simple, comfortable, and intentionally designed as a flexible space for everyday family life and entertaining. One wall was intentionally left open to accommodate the family’s projector for movie nights, creating a dedicated spot for gathering without overcomplicating the design.
Bathroom
The bathroom brings a true wellness element to the basement with a custom steam shower designed around the family’s daily routines. Beautiful blue shower tile, marble hexagon floor tile, and heated floors give the space a refined, spa-like feel, while the added complexity of the steam system was well worth it to create a feature the family can actually use every day.

A steam shower isn't something every family would choose, but for this family, it is something they can genuinely use every day, which is what makes a custom project so rewarding. We were able to take a completely unfinished basement and turn it into a comfortable place for this family to gather, relax, and make memories. It was exciting to see an unused level of the home become such a valuable part of their everyday life."
